Conserving the Fen Orchid

Dr Tim Upson and Pete Atkinson of CUBG.

We are working with Tim Pankhurst of plant conservation charity, Plantlife, on the Fen Orchid, Liparis loeslii. This tiny orchid is in decline throughout most of Europe and in East Anglia it’s down to three sites.

A green orchid with cream flowers.

We are currently trying to trap the mycorrhizal fungi necessary for the germination of the orchid by burying fine gauze packets of seed near existing plants in the wild. If we find the fungi we should be able to grow orchids from seed to enable us to study the plant’s ecology and possibly boost wild populations.
